Welcome Letter
Dear Friend,
Welcome to Flowers of the Wild.
Some flowers grow where everyone can admire them. Others grow quietly beside a walking track, between rocks, on a mountainside, or in a little patch of earth where we might easily pass them by.
Flowers of the Wild is a place for noticing those flowers.
Some will come from close to home, while others may take us to landscapes far away. They may be bright and impossible to miss, or so small that we have to stop and look carefully to discover them.
Through photographs and their stories, we will take a closer look at these little pieces of the natural world - where they grow, what makes them interesting, and sometimes simply what made us stop long enough to notice them.
Because beauty does not always grow in a garden. Sometimes it is waiting quietly beside the path.
Perhaps the next time you step outside, you might slow down, look a little closer, and discover something growing quietly along your own path.

FLOWERS OF THE WILD
Post 1 — Eve’s Pin Beneath the Snow

High in the Andes, where the landscape can be dry, rocky and exposed to extremes of weather, something green was standing beneath a fresh covering of snow.
It is known as Eve’s Pin (Austrocylindropuntia subulata), a cactus recognised by its unusual elongated stems and the little leaf-like growths that give it its distinctive appearance.
But it wasn’t the botanical details that made this moment worth photographing.
It was the contrast.
A plant we normally associate with sun and dry ground was standing there wearing little caps of white snow. Beneath them, touches of new colour were still visible.
For a moment, the harshness of the mountain and the delicacy of new growth were together in the same picture.
Perhaps that is one of the pleasures of looking closely at the natural world.
Sometimes beauty appears exactly where we would least expect to find it.
